GVWR

Dry Weight
The weight of an RV as it leaves the factory, with no passengers, cargo, water, or fuel. It is a baseline figure, not a realistic operating weight.
GCWR
Gross Combined Weight Rating — the maximum total weight of a tow vehicle and the trailer or load it is pulling, as rated by the tow vehicle manufacturer.
Payload Capacity
The maximum weight a vehicle can carry beyond its own curb weight, including passengers, cargo, and tongue weight from a trailer. Calculated as GVWR minus curb weight.
Slide-Out
A room extension that slides outward from the RV body when parked, expanding interior living space. Slide-outs must be fully retracted before moving the vehicle.
Shore Power
External AC electrical power supplied to an RV from a campsite pedestal. Available in 30-amp and 50-amp configurations; the RV's electrical system must match or be adapted to the service level.
Boondocking
Camping without any external hookups — no electricity, water, or sewer connections. Also called dry camping. Requires reliance on onboard tanks, batteries, solar, and/or a generator.
Black Water Tank
The holding tank that collects waste from the RV's toilet. It must be emptied at a dump station or full-hookup campsite sewer connection and treated with appropriate chemicals to control odor and break down waste.
Gray Water Tank
The holding tank that collects wastewater from sinks and showers (but not the toilet). Generally less regulated than black water but still requires proper disposal.
Inverter
A device that converts DC battery power to AC household current, allowing standard appliances to run without shore power or a generator. Inverter capacity is measured in watts.
Winterizing
The process of preparing an RV's water systems for freezing temperatures by draining tanks, blowing out lines with compressed air, and/or adding non-toxic antifreeze to prevent pipe damage.
Leveling
Adjusting an RV so it sits on a level plane when parked. Proper leveling is required for refrigerators to function correctly, for slide-outs to operate safely, and for general comfort.

Power, Hookups, and Water Systems

Shore power refers to external electrical power supplied via a pedestal at a campsite — typically 30-amp or 50-amp service. A 30-amp connection supports moderate electrical loads, while a 50-amp connection (technically two 120V legs) is required for rigs with multiple air conditioners or large appliances. Using the wrong adapter without understanding amperage limits can trip breakers or damage equipment.
Full hookups means a campsite provides shore power, a freshwater connection, and a sewer connection simultaneously. Partial hookups typically means electricity and water only. Adapters Don't Increase Capacity
A 30-amp-to-50-amp adapter allows physical connection to a different pedestal, but it does not change how much power your RV can draw. Running high-demand appliances simultaneously on mismatched service can still trip breakers or damage wiring. Always know your RV's actual amperage requirements and manage loads accordingly.
Towing and Chassis Terms
For towable RVs — travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers — a few additional terms define whether a setup is safe and legal.
Hitch weight (also called tongue weight) is the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch ball. It should typically fall between 10–15% of the trailer's total loaded weight. Too little hitch weight causes trailer sway; too much strains the tow vehicle's rear suspension.
WDH (Weight Distribution Hitch) redistributes hitch weight across the tow vehicle's axles, improving steering and braking when towing heavier trailers. A sway control device — either integrated into the WDH or a separate friction bar — dampens side-to-side trailer movement.
Fifth-wheel refers both to a hitch type mounted in a pickup bed and to the class of trailer designed to use it. The coupling sits over the rear axle of the tow vehicle, providing greater stability than a conventional ball hitch at higher weights.
