What Are Macronutrients?
Macronutrients are the three major classes of nutrients your body needs in relatively large amounts to function: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Unlike micronutrients — vitamins and minerals — macros are the primary sources of energy and the structural raw materials your body uses every day. Understanding what each one does helps explain why so many elimination diets come with real trade-offs.

Protein: Structure, Repair, and More
Protein is made up of amino acids — often called the building blocks of the body. It performs functions that no other macronutrient can fully substitute for:
- Tissue building and repair: Muscle, skin, hair, nails, and organ tissue all require a continuous supply of amino acids for maintenance and regeneration.
- Enzyme and hormone production: Many enzymes that drive chemical reactions in your body — as well as hormones like insulin — are proteins.
- Immune function: Antibodies are specialized proteins. Chronically low protein intake can impair immune response over time.

Carbohydrates are the body's primary and most readily available energy source. They break down into glucose, which powers cells — especially the brain, which relies almost exclusively on glucose under normal conditions.

Essential amino acids

Glucose

Unsaturated fat

Ketosis
A metabolic state in which the body shifts from using glucose as its primary fuel to breaking down fat into molecules called ketones, typically triggered by very low carbohydrate intake.
Carbohydrates divide broadly into two categories:
- Simple carbohydrates (sugars): Digest quickly, producing rapid rises in blood glucose. Found in fruit, dairy, and added sugars.
- Complex carbohydrates (starches and fiber): Break down more slowly, offering steadier energy. Whole grains, legumes, and vegetables are major sources.

Fat: Essential, Not Optional
Dietary fat has long carried an undeserved reputation. Fat is essential for several critical functions:
- Cell membrane integrity: Every cell in your body is surrounded by a membrane built largely from fatty acids.
- Fat-soluble vitamin absorption: Vitamins A, D, E, and K require dietary fat to be absorbed properly.
- Hormone synthesis: Cholesterol — a type of lipid — is the precursor to steroid hormones, including estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol.
- Brain health: Roughly 60% of the dry weight of the brain is fat; omega-3 fatty acids in particular are associated with cognitive function in current research.
Fats differ meaningfully by type. Unsaturated fats (found in olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, and avocados) are widely considered beneficial in the context of an overall healthy diet. Trans fats, largely removed from the U.S. food supply through regulatory action, are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Why Cutting Any Macronutrient Entirely Carries Trade-Offs
Popular diets sometimes frame one macronutrient as the enemy — very low-fat diets in the 1980s, very low-carb diets more recently. The trade-offs are real:
- Drastically cutting fat impairs absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and disrupts hormone production.
- Near-eliminating carbohydrates removes fiber and forces the body into ketosis, which some people manage well and others do not — and which may not suit everyone's health context.
- Insufficient protein slows muscle maintenance, impairs immune function, and can affect recovery from illness or injury.
None of this means rigid ratios are required for everyone. Individual needs vary considerably based on age, activity level, metabolic health, and other factors. What the evidence consistently supports is eating enough of each macronutrient from predominantly whole-food sources — not perfecting a formula.
