Core Terms: Networks, Protocols, and Standards

Zigbee

Matter

IP Address

A numerical label assigned to each device on a network. Your router assigns local IP addresses to devices in your home; these are different from the public IP address your internet provider assigns to your household.

Local control
When a device responds to commands processed on your home network rather than being routed through an external server. Local control generally means faster response times and continued function during an internet outage.
Cloud-dependent
A device or feature that requires an active internet connection and a manufacturer's remote server to function. If the service is discontinued, the device may stop working.
